You’ve found the Jellycat of your dreams. You’ve taken it home and enjoyed hours and hours of cuddles.
But you have one question: how on earth do you wash it?!
It’s important that jellies are kept clean and for them to be washed regularly. How you wash it will depend on the unique care instructions for each product.
Read on for all the information you need to know…
Understanding your Jellycat’s care instructions
“How to wash a Jellycat” is a VERY common Google search! As mentioned, your Jellycat will have care instructions specific to its design. That means even if you have a big collection of jellies that need washing, it’s SO important to check the care instructions for each one to avoid any damage.
The last thing you want is for your treasured toy to get injured!
Your Jellycat should have a unique label somewhere on its body (likely on the back or the bottom). On this label, it indicates the best way to wash your Jellycat; whether that be machine wash, hand wash or surface wash.
On the example below, the recommendation is to hand wash the Jellycat rather than using a washing machine.
For machine washable Jellycats
If you’re wondering how to wash a Jellycat that’s a little bigger, popping them into the washing machine is the easiest way to get them clean.
However, there’s a couple of hacks you can use to prevent your jelly from suffering any mishaps!
Simply follow the steps below to ensure a safe wash:
● Place the Jellycat in a pillowcase or laundry bag. This makes sure the toy is protected and doesn’t get caught on anything rough, such as the washing machine drum.
● Use a gentle cycle with cold water. Avoiding hot water will prevent your jelly from shrinking. The gentle wash will also make sure your toy doesn’t lose any fur!
● Add a small amount of mild detergent. Generally, Jellycats are little, so only require a smaller amount of cleaning product. If you have a chunky Sky Dragon, you may want to consider upping your level of detergent!
● Once the cycle is complete, remove the toy and reshape it. Air dry it or use a hairdryer on a cool setting to fluff the fur. Avoid using a hot setting to prevent any mishaps.
For hand washable Jellycats
For slightly more delicate Jellycats, hand washing them will be more suitable than using a washing machine. It’s always worth double checking your label if in doubt!
A lot of these steps are common sense but following each in order will make sure your jelly is as clean as it possibly can be.
● Fill a sink or washing up bowl with slightly warm water and a mild detergent. You don’t need loads of detergent – just a small cup would be fine.
● Submerge the toy and gently shake to loosen dirt. This ensures any surface muck is removed straight away.
● Use a soft cloth to clean stained areas. Jellycats are fairly durable but make sure you’re not being too rough.
● Rinse thoroughly with clean, cold water.
● Gently squeeze out excess water without twisting. You don’t want to give any of your jellies a broken leg!
● Reshape the toy and air dry. You can also use a hairdryer on a call setting if you want quick cuddles.
For surface wash only Jellycats
For how to wash a Jellycat that’s delicate, it’s best to avoid even hand washing them to avoid any damage.
○ Dampen a soft cloth with water and mild detergent.
○ Gently dab stained areas, avoiding being too rough.
○ Use a second, clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
○ Gently press with a dry towel to remove any remaining liquid.
○ Allow the toy to air dry completely. Avoid using a hair dryer if you can.
Drying your Jellycat
After you’ve gone through the steps of how to wash a Jellycat, it’s SO important that you never pop your Jellycat into a clothes dryer.
The heat will be too much for them and they could become seriously dehydrated…or much worse!
The best way to dry your Jellycat is to air dry it in a well-ventilated area away from the sun or any hot surfaces.
If your jelly isn’t too delicate, you can use a hairdryer on a cool setting to fluff their fur and prevent any stiffness as it dries.
Maintaining your Jellycat between washes
It’s easy to keep your jelly clean on a regular basis. Simply brush with a soft-bristled brush or carefully with a lint roller to remove any excess fluff or dirt.
It’s best to keep your toy in a clean, dry place when it’s not being used.
They also aren’t best kept in direct sunlight (and you can’t give them suncream!) so avoid leaving them on windowsills for long periods of time.
Checking the label and following the care instructions above will ensure your Jellycats are kept on top form for years to come.
